St. James Centre

The St. James Centre is a shopping centre and unoccupied Scottish Government office building located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was designed by Ian Burke & Martin in 1964.

Due to the brutalist architecture of the government offices atop the shopping centre it is one of Edinburgh's most unloved buildings although the shopping centre remains a popular and busy shopping location.

Development

A £850m redevelopment of the St. James Centre has been proposed by its owners, Henderson Global Investors. This would involve the construction of new shops, a public square area, two hotels and new apartments. The existing 1973 building would be completely demolished to make way for a three-storey, glass-roofed crescent-shaped building. It is anticipated the redevelopment of the retail elements would be completed by autumn 2016, and the entire scheme to be finished by spring 2018.[1][2]
